Update #4 – GPX Files & Final Prep
GPX Route Files
GPX files are ready for both distances!
Shared Folder: GPX Route files & waypoint info
550 km – RideWithGPS
370 km – RideWithGPS
Google Maps Overview: View here
The shared folder contains FULL and COMPAT versions of the GPX routes: Which file should I use?
Older Garmin (eTrex, Edge 500/705, Oregon): use COMPAT file (limited to 10,000 points)
Modern Garmin / Wahoo / phone apps: either file is fine (FULL has more points)
Unsure: use the COMPAT file
Terrain & Conditions
Expect:
Long and exposed climbs with some hike-a-bike, rough sections, and stunning scenery
Harsh Central Otago weather (hot, dry, windy, cold, wet, snow – who knows!) — be ready to wait it out if needed
Sections with very little natural shelter — pack layers and proper gear
Some long stretches between water availability - plan accordingly!
Resupply Tips
Common stops:
St Bathans – good overnight target (Vulcan Hotel kitchen closes 7:30 PM)
Omarama – extended route option
Lauder Basin Hut – emergency water (400m descent off-route)
Tarras – final reliable resupply before the finish
Thomson Track – has a clean creek mid-way (Aquatabs still recommended)
Pre/Post Ride Info
Start: Outlet Camp kitchen (continue past the camp office about 100m, and follow the sign on the left).
Chilled roll-out: The first couple of kilometres run along a popular river track. Expect walkers and other cyclists. We’ll keep it social and relaxed with no racing until we’re off the narrow section — please stay behind the front pacer. After that, it’s on (however you choose to ride).
Parking: Parking is available at the camp in the designated area across the road from the camp office — sites P1, P2, P3, and P4 (view the camp map). Please do not park elsewhere around the camp buildings or office. If you are leaving a vehicle, let the camp know in advance and ensure they have your registration number.
Camping: Discounted rate available at The Outlet Camp (thanks Amy & Callum!).
The camp is currently closed, so include “Reset” in the subject line of your email enquiry so they know you’re special 😉
Gear storage: Available for riders arriving by bike — ask at the Outlet Camp.
Pre-Ride Social:
b.Social Taproom — 6:00 pm the night before
Chat, last-minute questions, and SPOT collection (if you hired one).
Finish:
Back at Outlet Camp.
Free hot drinks for finishers will be available in the camp kitchen where you started.
Trackers
Hire cutoff: Wednesday 11th February 6pm
Test your tracker after activation:
Place it outside and confirm you appear on the MAProgress map
You should show as “Ready to Start” in green
We’ll also have a laptop at the start to help check

Routes
View last years routes on RideWithGPS
This year - routes will be viewable shortly on MAProgress.
Final GPX files sent 1-2 weeks before the ride. Don't expect huge changes.
Gear Storage & Resupply
Gear drop: If you rode to the start, you can leave extra gear securely at The Outlet Camp.
Resupply planning: Study your route and make your own list, but here’s mine from last year as a starter:
Bailing Out (Scratching Protocol)
If you need to pull out, mark yourself "scratched" on your MAProgress profile/app or email info@maprogress.com. This helps avoid unnecessary search parties!
